Workshop 2: Introduction to Accessibility (half-day)

Roger has provided website usability and accessibility services to corporate, government and not-for-profit organizations for more than a decade. He has conducted many accessibility testing sessions with web users who have different disabilities. He is familiar with the legal requirements in Australia relating to the provision of accessible web content and has a detailed knowledge of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 1.0 and WCAG 2.0). He has presented workshops in both Australia and the US and has written numerous articles on different aspects of website usability and accessibility.
What is “Introduction to Accessibility” all about?
User expectations of the internet are now higher than ever. They want sites that will work on different devices and sites and which now comply with the Commonwealth Disability Discrimination Act.
Many website owners and developers are unsure about what is meant by web content accessibility and how to ensure that people with disabilities have equal access to the information, goods and services provided on their sites.
This half-day workshop will provide a clear introduction to accessible web design and the laws and guidelines for web content accessibility.
You will learn:
- What is meant by accessibility and device independence
- How many people in Australia have different disabilities and their needs
- The requirements of the Disability Discrimination Act, the Australian Human Rights Commission and the Australian Government Information Management Office
- The overall aims and principals of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines
- The most common accessibility problems on websites today and how to address them
- How to determine if the content of your site is accessible.
