Time for a change

It has been over four years since I last reworked the Max Design site, and it was definitely beginning to show. The site was running WordPress 1.5, and the design was getting very tired. So, over the last few weeks I have gradually been working through the new look.

One of the biggest changes was pulling a lot of the old static “articles and presentations” pages into WordPress so they could be managed more cleanly. Unfortunately this has meant a major site restructure, so there will be a lot of 404 errors while things are gradually sorted.

A huge thank you to two people for their help:

  1. David McDonald, who helped with aspects of the WordPress migration and launch
  2. Andy Otes, who helped review all the content and rewrite as needed

Thanks for your feedback, Jason and Don :)

  4. Ollie says:

Hehe, you know, I’ve been following you through RSS and haven’t really noticed anything until just now when I clicked the detail link. Good work though. :)

  5. Russ says:

Hey Ollie, I often do this too – follow sites via RSS – some of them I have never been to :)

  6. Keith McLaughlin says:

Nice design. I tried clicking the logo to get to the homepage but it’s not a link!

  7. Nate Klaiber says:

The new site is wonderfully simple. I like the ‘sites’ section and the context you have around each of the sites. Makes it much more useful.

As with Ollie above, I don’t visit the site very often – but have been subscribed for a long time. It was nice to click through and see what you have done.

  8. Russ says:

Hey Keith, yes, I shall look into the logo clickability!

Hi Nate, thanks for the kind words. Thanks for making the trip past RSS :)

  9. Alex G says:

It’s looking fresh and shiny, congrats. I do love Max Design’s “links for light reading”, keep’em coming :)

    hi,

    the layout is ok.

but … sorry, the layout looks like everyone in the www. the unique idea is missing.

  11. Willie Ray says:

I really like the minimal design.

  12. Justin says:

I like the logo a lot! I first learned about CSS from Eric Meyer and your site. Thanks for that. How about a back to top link? Cheers.

  13. Rose Cox says:

Looks great Russ, I really like the new design.

I appreciate what a big job it would have been for you, moving all the content over so I’m sure readers will bear with you while you sort out any initial teething problems.

    Well done!

  14. Nick Cotton says:

Great work on the new design Russ. I’d second Keith’s suggestion about a clickable logo but other than that I really like it.

Looking forward to this week’s links as usual.

  15. Russ says:

Thanks all for comments… looks like a header home link is a must :)

Looks great Russ, I really like the new design.

  17. I also agree in regards to the clickable logo.

One thing I personally find in regards to the background of the list elements in the nav bar is that the corners neither look rounded nor angular but a bit in-between and not nicely aliased.

Also … why are they triple-spanned?
